We trace our history back five generations to the slate quarries on the Vermont - New York border near Granville, NY. The great-great grandfather of our owners, Bridget Hubal and Thomas Scheib, was a contractor who gained notoriety for his capabilities erecting the tall derricks used in the quarries.
Bridget and Thomas' great grandfather learned from his father and continued in the trade growing into a well-known rigger and house mover. He became quite a legend for his capabilities using only horses and block and tackle. In later years, he did use trucks, but as story has it, refused to use a crane to the end. His legacy lives on, John M. Mullins Rigging & Hauling.
Enter our Patriarch, Bill Scheib, his nickname is Burt. He too worked for the previous generation then set out on his own. Out of college Bill went to work for Chicago Bridge and Iron Company, which was one of the foremost, progressive, most efficient fabricators and erectors in the world. While there, he progressed rapidly to field foreman on projects ranging from oil refineries in Far East Asia to nuclear power plants in the United States.
Tiring of the travel, Bill moved to Vermont and, after working for others in the housing industry, began his own contracting business performing any job he could find. BURT crane & rigging officially incorporated in 1975.
In 2001 we welcomed the fifth generation Thomas Scheib. He started his schooling as an Aerospace Engineer. It wasn't until a break from college that he found his true calling when he joined us. Thomas holds both a Crane License and CDL allowing him to stay dialed in with the crew and work alongside them.
In 2008 Bridget Scheib joined us. Bridget graduated as a Civil Engineer in 2001 from Lehigh University. Bridget brings with her seven years of experience with Whiting-Turner Contracting, one of the top 20 construction firms in the United States. In 2011, Bridget became a Vice President of our company joining her brother Thomas in that position.
In 2012 Bridget and Thomas purchased the company from their father. They work tirelessly to expand the services the company provides to the ever growing customer base and continue to operate as a leader in bridge erection, rigging, specialized hauling and crane service.
In 2014, Burt Crane & Rigging received certification for a New York State Women Owned Business Enterprise.
